This is a blog that chronicles observations of a high school drama club diving into the arcane mystical arts. Natural talent and trained talent fuse as that etch out a life in the mysterious world of trickery, slight of hand, and deception.

These people in my drama club are fantastic. Varying degrees of complication and effort and of time consumption and dedication. All so diverse but bound in one small way or another. There are those who might as well be on a mission from God when it comes their work. Practicing vigorously whenever they catch my gaze. Always doing something to further refine their already impressive trick. New moves and questioning what can and what cannot be done; pushing their still pre-mature skills. Then there's the group lost in what I'm calling "Freshman Limbo". They show up and immediately group together like rain water at the bottom of a valley. All they do its talk talk talk and display little interest in learning magic. But there's something about them that keeps them in mind. Their minimal care makes them interesting. I'm enthralled for a short time; then am immediately reminded why I don't associate myself with them. This makes up the club. Those who practice and throes who take up practice space. An interesting group none the less. More to come soon.

I love the description of them grouping up like rain water.
ReplyDeleteWhen we were freshman we did the same thing if you think about it
ReplyDeleteYour blog is so interesting! It has already captured my attention. I'm sure that you will have a lot to notice from how students behave themselves differently through out the high school experience. I have seen movies like this where it displays a coming of age but honestly I think your observations interest me more because no paid actors are you going to talk about and they don't have any rolls to play out.
ReplyDeleteI think that most if not every incoming freshman have this belief that they are to good for school spirit and things of that sort. Which shouldn't be the case. You describe this very well. You have a beautiful blog so far.
ReplyDeleteI like how your blogging about drama, and some of your lines are very interesting, and makes me want to know more about what's going on with everyone. The part where you said "pushing their still pre-mature skills." Reminds me of alot of other things that involve newbies at something. I also agree with Khristian.. that we were once freshman.. and we need to remember that.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you left out some detail of why you dont talk to the freshman because it leaves wondering if there's more to it than their lack of interest and participation.
ReplyDeleteHunter, this blog is great. Limbo is a place of waiting, where people figure out where they will end up next. They will find their place, their motivation, and confidence. I feel some appreciation for your slight belief for those you stay in "freshman limbo."
ReplyDeleteI agree with your thought of the freshmen, not the best group when it comes to hard work. I have to deal with that when I have to go help AVID kids with binder checks and brain gyms (and I thought they were in AVID, but they are freshmen). Sooner or later they will come around and be better, you just have to be very, very patient. Anyway, great post. I can't wait to read more from you.
